Basseterre, Saint Kitts, April 14, 2026 (PMO): Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew has issued a direct and timely appeal to the business community of St Kitts and Nevis to ensure that recent government-led cost reduction measures translate into tangible relief for consumers at the point of sale.
The call comes on the heels of a series of significant interventions announced during the Prime Minister’s National Address, including reductions in fuel taxes, cuts to the Customs Service Charge on gasoline, the removal of taxes and duties on alternative energy equipment, and the exclusion of shipping surcharges from customs calculations. These measures, collectively valued in the millions of dollars, were designed to ease operational costs across sectors and provide meaningful financial relief to households.

Prime Minister Drew emphasized that the success of these policies depends not only on government action, but on responsible and fair business practices. In his address, he made a clear appeal, stating, “To our businesses: we ask not for charity but for fairness. When Government reduces taxes, let those savings reach the people at the counter. Because when our people can breathe, our economy grows—and that benefits everyone.”
The Prime Minister underscored that these interventions were not abstract policy decisions, but carefully calibrated actions intended to reduce the cost of living across the Federation. By lowering fuel costs, easing import-related charges, and supporting energy independence, the Government has created an environment where businesses can operate with reduced overheads—an opportunity, he noted, that should directly benefit consumers.
Prime Minister Drew also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to continuing to monitor economic conditions and to act where necessary, but made it clear that shared responsibility is key in navigating current global challenges. He encouraged businesses to act as partners in national development by supporting affordability, fairness, and transparency in pricing.
The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis remains steadfast in its mission to ease the burden on its people while building a resilient and inclusive economy, and is calling on all stakeholders to play their part in ensuring that the benefits of these historic measures are widely felt across the Federation.
