Gros Islet, St. Lucia, July 6, 2026 (PMO) — Outgoing Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, has reaffirmed that regional integration remains indispensable to the future of the Caribbean, urging Member States to continue working collectively to advance security, economic prosperity, and sustainable development across the region.
Addressing Heads of Government, regional officials, and distinguished guests during the Opening Ceremony of the 51st Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, Prime Minister Drew reflected on the enduring value of the regional movement, noting that the Caribbean’s greatest achievements have always been realized through unity and shared purpose.
Reflecting on his stint as Chairman, Prime Minister Drew recalled that one of his earliest priorities was strengthening relationships among Member States through direct engagement with every Head of Government. Those discussions, he said, reaffirmed the collective commitment to the regional integration movement and reinforced the conviction that the Caribbean’s future is stronger when nations work together.
He also highlighted the invaluable contribution of CARICOM’s institutions, describing them as practical examples of regional integration in action. From public health and education to justice and security, he noted that these institutions demonstrate the tangible benefits of Caribbean cooperation. “What is often unseen is a remarkable network of regional institutions quietly serving our people every single day.”
Prime Minister Drew, in drawing example, pointed to Trinidad and Tobago’s successful election to the United Nations Security Council, a testament to CARICOM’s influence when it speaks with one voice.
“Although Trinidad and Tobago was the candidate, it entered that election carrying the united and public support of the Caribbean community. That support mattered. It demonstrated that when CARICOM stands behind one of its own, our collective voice commands respect on the world stage.”
He said the same principle applies to regional economic development, noting that stronger trade among CARICOM Member States supports Caribbean businesses, workers, and families while strengthening the region’s collective resilience.
Addressing the challenges that will inevitably arise, Prime Minister Drew encouraged leaders to remain steadfast in protecting the institution that has served the Caribbean for more than five decades. “There will always be difficult issues before the community. There will always be spirited debates. There will always be differing perspective that is natural. It must be expected, but it is also healthy. What must never become natural, however, is allowing those differences to weaken the institution that has served our people so well.”
He continued, “If we protect that unity and togetherness, nurture it, and place Caribbean above ourselves, then the future of this community will be brighter than its past.”
